Beginning in the late 19th century, the development of electricity in Indonesia was intensified in several Dutch Companies operating in sugar and tea plantation that developed power plant to meet their personal needs.
Between 1942-1945, there was a great shift from these Dutch manufacturing companies by the Japanese after the Dutch surrendered to the Japanese army in the beginning of World War II.

The shift reoccurred at the end of World War II in August 1945 when the Japanese surrendered to the Allied Forces. This opportunity was taken over by the youths and electricity labourers through Labour/Employee Electricity and Gas delegation together with the Management of KNI Head Office to meet President Soekarno to ask the handover of the Companies to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. On October 27, 1945, President Soekarno established Electricity and Gas Bureau under the Departement of Public Works and Energy with power plant capacity of 157.5 MW.

On January 1, 1961, Gas and Electricity Bureau was changed to BPU-PLN (Board of General Administration of the State Electricity Company) that focused on electricity, gas and coke sectors. On January 1, 1965 BPU-PLN was dismissed and 2 (two) state owned enterprises were formalised, namely Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), a state-owned electricity company, to manage electrity power and Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) to manage gas power.

In 1972, in accordance with Government Regulation No. 17, the State-owned Electricity Company was enacted as a State-owned General Electricity Company and as PKUK responsible to provide electricity to meet public needs. While the Government policy was giving opportunity to the Private Sectors to focus on the provision of electricity, the status of PLN was changed from a General Company to Corporation’ as well as PKUK in providing electricity for public needs until the present. In regards of rules of region of west java province number 1/DP-040/PD/1978 dated June 27th, 1978 has been changed from Bank Karya to be Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Barat.

In order to fulfill the community’s request on banking service based on Syariah, with the permission of Bank Indonesia number 2/18/DpG/DPIP dated April 12th, 2000, since April 15, 2000, Bank jabar became the first Bank Pembangunan Daerah which had dual banking system which to give service in conventional system and syariah sytem.

Based on the result of meeting of the share holder (RUPS-LB) PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Barat dated July 3rd, 2007, along with the decision letter from Governor of Bank Indonesia number 9/63/KEP.GBI/2007 dated November 26, 2007, about the changes of business permit on behalf of the name PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Barat became business permit in the name of PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Barat and Banten and with decision letter from board of directors number 1065/SK/DIR-PPN/2007 dated November 29th, 2007 therefore, the name of corporation has been changed to PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Barat and Banten with call name Bank Jabar Banten

The presence of railways in Indonesia was marked by the first hoeing railway construction in the village Kemijen, dated June 17, 1864 Friday by the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, Mr.. Baron van den L.A.J Sloet Beele. Development initiated by "Naamlooze Venootschap Spoorweg Nederlandsch Indische Maatschappij" (NV. NISM) led by Ir. JP de Bordes from Kemijen Responsibility towards the village (26 Km) with a width of 1435 mm gauge. This road was opened for public transport on Saturday, August 10, 1867.

The success of private, NV. NISM build a railway between Kemijen - Responsibility, which later on February 10, 1870 can connect the city of Semarang - Mumbai (110 km), eventually encourage investors to build a railway in other areas. Not surprisingly, that growth in length of the railway between 1864 - 1900 with rapid growth. If in 1867 only 25 km, in 1870 to 110 km, reaching 405 km in 1880, the year 1890 to 1427 km and in the year 1900 to 3338 km.

In addition to Java, railway construction was also conducted in Aceh (1874), North Sumatra (1886), West Sumatra (1891), Texas (1914), even in 1922 in Sulawasi also been built along the 47 km railway between Napier - Takalar, who performed the operation on July 1, 1923, the remaining Ujungpandang - Maros have not been resolved. While in Borneo, although it had not been built, the railway study Pontianak - Sambas (220 km) has been completed. Similarly, in the island of Bali and Lombok, never done railway development studies.

Until 1939, the length of railway in Indonesia reached 6811 km. However, in 1950 reduced to 5910 km in length, about 901 Km Iebih disappeared, which is expected because during the Japanese occupation dismantled and transported to Burma for the construction of railway there.

This type of street railway tracks in Indonesia originally distinguished by the width of 1067 mm gauge; 750 mm (in Aceh) and 600 mm in some branches and cross-city tram. The dismantled railway during the Japanese occupation (1942 - 1943) along 473 km, while the railway was built during the Japanese occupation is 83 miles between Bayah - Cikara and 220 km between Muaro - Pekanbaru. Ironically, with the crude technology, railway Muaro - Pekanbaru completed construction is programmed for 15 months which employs 27,500 people, 25,000 of them are romusha. Road through the swamps, hills, and the swift current of the river, many claimed that his tomb strewn along Muaro-Pekanbaru.

After the independence of Indonesia diproklamir out on August 17, 1945, the railway employees who are members of "Force Moeda Train" (AMKA)'s authority to take over the railways from the Japanese side. The historic event occurred on September 28, 1945. The reading of the statement by members of AMKA Ismangil and others, asserted that the starting date of 28 September 1945 the railway power in the hands of the Indonesian nation. Japanese people are not allowed to intervene again perkeretaapi's affairs in Indonesia. This is what underlies the enactment of 28 September 1945 as the Day of Railways in Indonesia, as well as the establishment of "Department of Railways of the Republic of Indonesia" (DKARI). WIKA was born out of the nationalization process of a Dutch company bearing the name Naamloze Vennotschap Technische Handel Maatschappij en Bouwbedijf Vis en Co. or NV Vis en Co. Pursuant To Government Regulation No. 2 / 1960 and Minister of Public Works and Electric Power (PUTL) Decree No. 5 dated 11 March 1960, WIKA was established with the name of Perusahaan Negara Bangunan Widjaja Karja. WIKA’s line of business at the time was electrical and water pipe installation works. In the early 1960s, WIKA took part in the construction project of Gelanggang Olah Raga Bung Karno on the occasion of the Games of the New Emerging Forces (GANEFO) and the 4th Asian Games in Jakarta.

With the passing of time, various improvements were made in order to continue growing as well as contribute to nation-building by providing construction services throughout the country.

The first significant growth occurred in 1972, when the name Perusahaan Negara Widjaja Karja was changed to PT Wijaya Karya. WIKA then developed into a construction contractor by handling various important projects such as the installation of electricity grids at Asahan and the Jatiluhur irrigation project.

A decade later, in 1982, WIKA underwent expansion with the establishment of several new divisions, namely the Construction Civil Division, Building Division, Housing Facilities Division, Concrete and Metal Products Division, Industrial Construction Division, Energy Division, and Commerce Division. The projects handled at the time included among others the LIPI Building, the Bukopin Building, and the Building and Irrigation Project. Moreover, with the progressive growth of its subsidiaries in the industrial sector WIKA was transformed into an integrated and synergetic infrastructure company.

The skills of WIKA personnel in the construction industry have pushed the Company to further explore the various areas in which it does business by establishing a number of subsidiaries in order that they can become independent as business ventures that specializes in creating their own respective products. In 1997, WIKA founded its first subsidiary company, namely PT Wijaya Karya Beton, a reflection of how fast the Concrete Division was growing in WIKA at the time.

PT Wijaya Karya Beton’s activity at the time , among others, is the provision of rail tracks for the construction of the Manggarai double-track lane in Jakarta, the construction of the Grati Steam-powered Power Station (PLTGU) and also the Barelang Bridge in Batam. The PT Wijaya Karya Beton measure was then followed by the establishment of PT Wijaya Karya Realty in 2000 as a natural progression of the Realty Division. Subsequently in the same year PT Wijaya Karya Intrade was also established as the progression of the Industrial and Commercial Division.

As the Company developed more and more, so too did the public’s confidence in the Company’s capability. This was reflected in WIKA’s success in launching its Initial Public Offering/IPO on 27 October 2007 at the Indonesia Stock Exchange (known at the time as the Jakarta Stock Exchange). During the IPO, WIKA released 28.46 percent of its shares to the public, so that the government of the Republic of Indonesia held 68.42 percent, while the rest was owned by the public, including WIKA employees, through the Employee/ Management of Stock of Option Program (E/MSOP), and Employee Stock Allocation (ESA).

Meanwhile, the measure of developing Divisions into selfsufficient subsidiary companies continued to be taken. In 2008 WIKA established subsidiary company PT Wijaya Karya Gedung that specializes in the development of high rise buildings. WIKA also acquired 70.08 percent shares of PT Catur Insan Pertiwi that specializes in the field of mechanical-electrical. Then PT Catur Insan Pertiwi was renamed into PT Wijaya Karya Insan Pertiwi. In 2009, together with PT Jasa Sarana and RMI, established PT Wijaya Karya Jabar Power specializes in the development of geothermal power station (PLTP) projects.

In the mid of 2009, WIKA together with other companies have succeded in completing the Suramadu Bridge, a prestigious project that connects Java and Madura islands. Currently the project have been enjoyed by the community at large.

Entering 2010, WIKA is faced with a changing business environment with greater challenges. Thus, WIKA has defined a new vision which is the Vision 2020, to become one of the best integrated EPC and Investment Companies in South East Asia.
